02Plan: the sites that tell the story
From the first pyramids at Saqqara and Dahshur to the temples of Karnak, Abydos and Dendera and the tombs of Thebes.
03Best time to go

Planning an Egyptology Tour
An Egyptology tour is about understanding what you see. Here is how we plan them, and where to read more before you go.
Cairo, Saqqara and Dahshur
Start where Egyptian history starts: the Step Pyramid of Djoser at Saqqara, the Bent and Red Pyramids at Dahshur, then Giza and the Grand Egyptian Museum.
Luxor, ancient Thebes
Karnak and Luxor Temple on the east bank; the Valley of the Kings, the Valley of the Queens, Deir el-Medina and Medinet Habu on the west bank.
Abydos and Dendera
Two of the best-preserved temples in Egypt, north of Luxor: the Temple of Seti I at Abydos and the Temple of Hathor at Dendera, with its painted ceilings.
Read before you go
Our guides to religion in ancient Egypt, the ancient Egyptian gods and hieroglyphs are a good start.
