Egypt is one of the few places where you can count down to midnight beside a 4,500-year-old pyramid, wake up on the Nile, and still be on a Red Sea beach before the week is out. Late December is also the best weather of the year to see the country: dry, sunny days and cool evenings, without the summer heat.
This guide covers where to spend New Year’s Eve 2026, what the weather is really like, how Christmas fits around it (Egypt celebrates two Christmases), and how to book before the season fills up.
In short: a classic way to spend New Year in Egypt is in Cairo, at the New Year’s Eve celebrations by the Pyramids, then on to Luxor or a Nile cruise. Our New Year trips include New Year in Egypt: Cairo and a Nile cruise (8 days, from $1,580 per person) and Christmas and New Year in Cairo and Luxor (5 days, from $615). All of them are private, with airport transfers. See all our Christmas and New Year tours in Egypt; the last week of December fills first, so book early.
Where to Spend New Year's Eve in Egypt

At the Pyramids of Giza
The most memorable way to see in the new year is beside the Great Pyramid. Our New Year’s Eve at the Pyramids evening on 31 December 2026 combines dinner, live music and fireworks over the Giza plateau, with packages from $149 per person. Places are limited and it is usually the first New Year experience to sell out, so reserve as soon as your dates are fixed.
On a Nile cruise
A cruise between Luxor and Aswan over the holidays gives you the temples by day and a gala dinner on board on the 31st. Most five-star ships hold a festive dinner with entertainment on New Year’s Eve, and you wake up on 1 January moored beside a temple rather than in a city. For something quieter, a dahabiya carries only a handful of cabins and sails under canvas, so the night feels private rather than crowded.
In Cairo
Cairo’s large hotels on the Nile hold gala dinners on the 31st, and a dinner cruise on the river, with live music and a traditional show, is a relaxed alternative to a ballroom. The days either side are easy to fill: the museums and Islamic Cairo, the Grand Egyptian Museum, Khan el-Khalili and a day at Saqqara. Our guide to the best luxury hotels in Cairo covers where to stay.
In Luxor and Aswan
Upper Egypt is warmer than Cairo in winter and far calmer at night. A sunrise balloon over the West Bank of Luxor on 1 January is a memorable first morning of the year (see our guide to balloon rides in Luxor), and the desert around Luxor suits a jeep, quad or camel ride between temple visits. In Aswan the evening is about the river: a felucca at sunset and dinner looking across to Elephantine Island.
On the Red Sea
The biggest parties are on the coast. In Sharm El Sheikh, Naama Bay and SOHO Square are the centre of New Year’s Eve; in Hurghada, the Marina holds fireworks, live music and shows, and El Gouna’s resorts host gala dinners by the water. The sea stays warm enough to swim and snorkel through the winter, and a boat trip to Giftun Island makes an easy first day of the year. Start with our guide to the Red Sea’s beaches.
Somewhere quieter
If you would rather see the year in away from the crowds, Siwa Oasis in the Western Desert offers starlit nights and old mud-brick villages, and Alexandria’s Corniche and Bibliotheca Alexandrina make a calm Mediterranean alternative. See Alexandria’s top attractions.
Egypt's Weather at New Year
Late December and early January are the coolest weeks of the year, which in Egypt still means comfortable sightseeing weather:
- Cairo and Giza: around 19–20°C in the day, dropping to about 10°C at night. Bring a warm layer for an evening at the Pyramids.
- Luxor and Aswan: around 23–24°C in the day, but desert nights can fall to 6–9°C, and early balloon flights are cold.
- Hurghada and the Red Sea: around 22–23°C in the day, with the sea at about 22°C.
Rain is rare everywhere. Our winter packing list covers what to bring for warm days and chilly nights.
Christmas and New Year Together

Egypt has two Christmases. Western Christmas on 25 December is celebrated in the hotels, on the cruise ships and in Cairo’s Catholic and Protestant churches, while most of Egypt’s Christians are Coptic Orthodox and celebrate on 7 January, which is a national holiday. That gives you a festive season that runs from Christmas Eve to the Coptic Christmas, with New Year in the middle.
If you are travelling over both, visit Coptic Cairo, where the Hanging Church and the Church of St. Sergius are at their most atmospheric. Read more in how to celebrate Christmas in Egypt and on our Coptic Christmas page.
Tips for Booking New Year in Egypt
- Book early. 24 December to 6 January is the busiest fortnight of Egypt’s year. Nile cruise cabins and the best hotels in Cairo and Luxor are often full by October.
- Ask about gala supplements. Hotels and cruise ships add a compulsory charge for the Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve dinners. Check that it is included in your price.
- Plan the 31st around one place. Traffic in Cairo on New Year’s Eve is heavy. Stay at, or close to, where you are celebrating.
- Pre-book the big sights. The Grand Egyptian Museum, the Valley of the Kings and Abu Simbel are at their busiest in this fortnight. A licensed guide with timed entry saves hours of queueing.
- Bring a jacket. Evenings outdoors, at the Pyramids or on deck, are cool.
