What Actually Happens
New Year’s Eve at Giza is the one night of the year when the plateau stays open into the small hours. Dinner is served with the Great Pyramid floodlit a few hundred metres away, and midnight is marked with fireworks over the necropolis.
Packages are built around a gala dinner, live music and a countdown on the sand. The pyramids are lit throughout, so the view holds from the first course to well past midnight.
Numbers are capped and the event sells out months in advance — this is not a night you can decide on at the last minute.
Historical Background
The Giza necropolis has stood for 4,500 years, and the Great Pyramid was the tallest structure on earth for close to four millennia.
Organised New Year celebrations on the plateau began in the modern era as Egypt opened the site for controlled evening events, and the Sound and Light show established the tradition of the pyramids illuminated after dark.
The opening of the Grand Egyptian Museum next to the plateau has made the area the focus of Egypt’s biggest celebrations of the year.
