Nile cruises and day trips that stop at Edfu
Edfu, between Luxor and Aswan, has the Temple of Horus, the best-preserved temple in Egypt: roof, pylon and sanctuary all still stand. Almost every Nile cruise stops here, and it is a popular day trip from Luxor or Aswan.
The temple was built under the Ptolemies, between 237 and 57 BC. Cruise ships moor on the riverbank and guests reach the temple by horse carriage or minibus. Go early or late in the day to avoid the midday heat and the crowds. A guide helps a great deal, because most of the story is told in the carved walls.
See it on a Nile cruise between Luxor and Aswan, or on our Edfu and Kom Ombo day tour from Aswan.
Allow about an hour and a half at the temple, plus the ride from the boat or from your hotel.
Yes. Karnak is a vast ruin built over centuries, while Edfu is almost complete, so you see a temple much as it looked in antiquity.
