Egypt Tours from Canada
From Canada, Egypt is one nonstop flight from Toronto and a single connection from Montreal, Vancouver and Calgary. Here is what Canadian travellers need to know about flights, the visa, time difference and the best time to go.
Flights from Canada
EgyptAir flies nonstop from Toronto Pearson to Cairo, about 10.5 hours eastbound, several times a week. From Montreal, Vancouver, Calgary and other cities, connect through Europe or the Middle East, for example via London, Paris, Frankfurt, Istanbul or Doha. From Cairo, domestic flights take about an hour to Luxor, Aswan, Hurghada or Sharm El Sheikh.
Visa for Canadian citizens
Canadians need a visa: an e-Visa online before you fly ($30 single entry) or a visa on arrival ($30 in cash). Your passport must be valid for six months after arrival. Details in our Egypt visa guide.
Time difference
Cairo is 7 hours ahead of Toronto and Montreal and 10 hours ahead of Vancouver for most of the year; for a few weeks in spring and autumn, when the two countries change their clocks on different dates, the gap is an hour shorter.
When to go from Canada
Egypt's mild, sunny winter, from November to March, is the perfect escape from a Canadian winter, and October and April are warm and quieter. Christmas, New Year and March break are the busiest weeks, so book early. See the best time to visit Egypt.
Money, plugs and practicalities
- Bring US dollars or euros, which are easier to exchange than Canadian dollars; cards work in hotels and larger restaurants, and you need Egyptian pounds for tips and markets.
- Egypt uses European two-pin plugs (types C and F) at 220 V: bring an adapter and check that your devices accept 220 V.
- Read the Government of Canada travel advice before you go; see is Egypt safe?.
- Take travel insurance that covers medical care abroad.
