Soma Bay is a private peninsula on the Red Sea coast, about 45 kilometres south of Hurghada and a little north of Safaga. It is home to a small number of large resorts that share the peninsula, a championship golf course, a spa culture and some of the most reliable wind on the coast. There is no town: everything happens inside the resorts.
Who Soma Bay suits
- Kitesurfers and windsurfers: the wind blows on most days and the shallow, flat lagoon on the peninsula is ideal for learning.
- Golfers: the course runs along the sea between the resorts.
- Couples and families who want a quiet, self-contained resort and are happy to stay inside it.
- Divers and snorkellers: several hotels have long jetties out to the reef, and Safaga’s dive sites are close.
What to ask before booking
- Does the hotel have its own jetty and house reef, or a sandy beach?
- How far is it to the kite centre, if you want to kitesurf?
- Is it all-inclusive? With no town nearby, you will eat most meals in the resort.
- Is the hotel sheltered from the wind for sunbathing?
When to go
Soma Bay is warm and sunny all year. Spring and autumn are the most pleasant; the summer wind keeps the heat bearable; winter is mild by day but breezy. For kitesurfing, the wind is strongest from spring to autumn.
Getting there
Soma Bay is about 45 minutes by road from Hurghada International Airport. Luxor is about three and a half hours away, so the temples of the Nile Valley fit easily into a beach holiday here. See also our Hurghada hotel guide, the Red Sea beaches and our day trips from Hurghada.
