Cairo earned the name “city of a thousand minarets” honestly. Behind the medieval gates lies an unbroken run of mosques, madrasas and merchants’ houses built between the tenth century and the nineteenth, most of them still in daily use rather than roped off as monuments.
The quarter is best walked slowly: Khan El-Khalili for the coppersmiths and the coffee houses, then up to Al-Azhar Park for the view back over the rooftops at sunset.
