The Phenomenon

What Actually Happens

On October 22nd — the anniversary of Ramses II’s birth — the rising sun repeats the alignment it performs each February. At 7:15 AM the light travels 65 metres down the rock-cut corridor and floods the sanctuary.

Three of the four seated statues are lit: Ramses himself, Ra-Horakhty and Amun-Ra. Ptah, god of the underworld, stays in shadow exactly as the architects intended 3,200 years ago.

The October alignment is noticeably less crowded than February, which makes it the better choice if you want space to photograph the facade at dawn.

The Story

Historical Background

Ramses II ruled for 66 years (1279–1213 BC) and built Abu Simbel as a monument to his victory at Kadesh and a statement of his own divinity. The four colossi at the entrance are each 20 metres tall.

Sand buried the temple for centuries until Swiss explorer Johann Ludwig Burckhardt rediscovered it in 1813.

In 1964 UNESCO cut the temple into 2,000 blocks and moved it 65 metres higher to save it from the rising waters of Lake Nasser — a four-year, $40 million operation involving engineers from 50 countries.
