Summary
Cairo International Airport (CAI) is about 20 km northeast of downtown Cairo and has three main passenger terminals. The drive to the city centre often takes 25 to 45 minutes, and much longer at busy times. Most visitors find a pre-booked private transfer the easiest way to reach their hotel, especially after a long flight or if they are staying in Giza. Check your terminal on your boarding pass before you travel, because airlines can change terminals.
Cairo Airport Terminals
- Terminal 3 is the newest and largest, and the main base for EgyptAir and its Star Alliance partners.
- Terminals 1 and 2 handle most other international airlines.
A free shuttle bus connects the terminals, and Terminals 2 and 3 are also linked by a walkway. If you are changing between airlines in different terminals, leave plenty of time.
What Happens When You Arrive
- Follow the signs to passport control.
- If you need a visa and do not have one, sort it out before the passport desk. Read our Egypt visa guide first.
- Collect your bags and pass through customs.
- Meet your driver or go to the taxi rank or ride-hailing pickup point for your terminal.

| Option | Best for | Keep in mind |

At the time of writing, the metro does not reach the terminals directly, so check the current route before relying on it.
Cairo Airport to Giza
Giza is on the far side of the city from the airport, so allow more time than for downtown, especially at rush hour. A private transfer saves you crossing the city with luggage. Choosing where to stay? See our guide to the best luxury hotels in Cairo.
