The Phenomenon

What Actually Happens

Sandbox turns a stretch of Red Sea beach into one of the region’s largest electronic music gatherings. Three stages run from late afternoon until sunrise, with international headliners and Egypt’s own scene sharing the bill.

The setting is what separates it — you dance barefoot on sand with the sea a few metres away, and the sun comes up over the water while the last set is still playing.

El Gouna itself is a purpose-built resort town of lagoons and marinas, so everything sits within a short walk or tuk-tuk ride.

The Story

Historical Background

Sandbox launched in 2013 and has grown into the Middle East’s best-known beach electronic festival, drawing crowds from across Europe and the Gulf.

El Gouna was built from the 1990s as a self-contained resort town on the Red Sea, and its beaches and lagoons have made it Egypt’s festival capital — Sandbox in summer, the El Gouna Film Festival in autumn.

Insider Tips

01

Book accommodation in El Gouna early — the town sells out months before the festival.

02

Bring sun protection and a refillable bottle. Daytime heat on the beach is serious.

03

Cash is useful for tuk-tuks between the town and the festival site.

04

Earplugs are worth carrying — the stages are loud and you will be there for hours.

05

Hurghada airport is 25 minutes away and has direct flights from most of Europe.
