Christmas and New Year fall in the best weather of Egypt’s year: mild, sunny days that are ideal for the pyramids and temples, and a Red Sea that is still warm enough for many visitors to swim. It is also the busiest fortnight of the season, so hotels and Nile cruises fill early. Our Christmas and New Year tours are private trips with an Egyptologist guide, festive dinners where the hotel or ship holds them, and dates set around your holiday.
| Trip | Length | Price per person |

| Christmas & New Year in Cairo & Luxor | 5 days | From $615 |

Lowest price per person sharing a double room; it varies with the season and the hotels you choose.
Western Christmas on 25 December is not a public holiday in Egypt, but hotels and cruise ships that host international guests decorate and usually hold a gala dinner on Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve, often as a set-price supplement. Egypt’s Coptic Christians celebrate Christmas on 7 January, a public holiday. New Year’s Eve is the big night in Cairo hotels, on Nile cruises and on the Red Sea. See our guide to celebrating New Year in Egypt.
Days are mild and sunny, warmest in Luxor and Aswan; mornings, evenings and the desert at night are cool, so bring a warm layer. See Egypt in December and Egypt in January for the details by city.
The last week of December and the first week of January are the busiest of the year. Prices are at their highest and the best hotels and ships sell out first, so we recommend booking two to three months ahead. Check the visa rules for your nationality at the same time.
Yes, for the weather: it is one of the most comfortable times for sightseeing. It is also the busiest and most expensive, so book early.
Many hotels and Nile cruises hold a compulsory gala dinner on 24 and 31 December. We tell you in advance whether it applies to your hotel or ship and what it costs.
Yes. Our eight- to eleven-day tours include a Nile cruise, and the dates can be set so New Year’s Eve falls on board.
On 7 January. It is a public holiday in Egypt, and some sites and offices close or open shorter hours.
Two to three months ahead for the best choice of hotels and ships; later bookings are possible but with fewer options.
