Imhotep Museum

The Imhotep Museum at Saqqara is a modern, thoughtfully designed museum dedicated to the genius of Imhotep — the architect who designed the Step Pyramid of Djoser and is considered the father of stone architecture. Opened in 2006, the museum houses an impressive collection of artifacts discovered during excavations at the Saqqara necropolis.

Collections

The museum features six halls displaying beautifully preserved artifacts including the magnificent wooden coffin of Imhotep, mummies, pottery, architectural elements, and stone vessels. One of the highlights is a collection of exquisite blue faience tiles from the underground chambers of the Step Pyramid. The museum also pays tribute to Jean-Philippe Lauer, the French architect who dedicated 75 years of his life to restoring the Saqqara complex.

Why Visit

The Imhotep Museum provides essential context for understanding the Saqqara complex and the revolutionary achievements of ancient Egyptian architecture. Its air-conditioned galleries also offer a welcome respite from the desert heat during site visits.
