Avenue of Sphinxes

The Avenue of Sphinxes, also known as the Road of Rams or Tareeq al-Kebbash, is a magnificent 2.7-kilometer processional road connecting Karnak Temple to Luxor Temple. Lined with over 1,050 sphinx statues, this ancient ceremonial path was recently restored and reopened in a spectacular ceremony in November 2021, making it one of the newest major attractions in Luxor.

Historical Significance

The avenue was originally constructed during the New Kingdom period and served as the sacred processional route for the annual Opet Festival, during which the cult statue of Amun was carried from Karnak to Luxor Temple accompanied by music, dancing, and celebration. Different sections of the avenue feature different sphinx forms — ram-headed sphinxes near Karnak and human-headed sphinxes closer to Luxor Temple.

Walking the Avenue

Walking the full length of the avenue, especially at sunset or when illuminated in the evening, is one of the most magical experiences in Luxor. The avenue passes through the heart of modern Luxor, creating a stunning juxtaposition of ancient and contemporary Egypt.
