Overview
Sound & Light Show Karnak
The Sound and Light Show at Karnak Temple is a narrated evening spectacle that takes visitors on a walking journey through the illuminated complex from the Avenue of Sphinxes entrance to the Sacred Lake. Unlike the Giza show, which uses a fixed amphitheater, the Karnak show is ambulatory — audiences walk in guided groups through the pylons, hypostyle hall, and open courts as the illuminated reliefs and columns are progressively revealed with narration and dramatic lighting.
The show covers 2,000 years of Karnak’s history, describing the contributions of major pharaohs as visitors walk past the monuments they built. The Great Hypostyle Hall lit at night — 134 massive columns casting long shadows with hieroglyphic reliefs picked out by colored spotlights — creates an atmosphere qualitatively different from any daytime visit. The finale takes place at the Sacred Lake, where audiences sit on tiered seating as the lake surface reflects the lit temple columns.
The show runs in multiple languages on a rotating schedule — English, French, Arabic, Italian, Spanish, German, and Japanese sessions operate across the week. Session capacity is limited and advance confirmation is recommended during high season.
History & Significance
The Karnak Sound and Light Show was inaugurated in 1974 as part of an expansion of Egypt’s cultural tourism infrastructure. The Karnak production was specifically designed to take advantage of the complex’s vast scale and variety of spaces, leading to the decision to make it a walking tour rather than a fixed-seat spectacle.
The show’s scripted narrative has been updated multiple times to reflect evolving archaeological understanding. The lighting has been upgraded in phases, most recently with LED systems replacing tungsten spotlights and significantly expanding the color palette available for illuminating the monuments.
The show is operated by the Egyptian Sound and Light Company, a state-owned entity under the Ministry of Antiquities.
