Colored Canyon

The Colored Canyon is one of the Sinai Peninsula's most spectacular natural wonders, a narrow slot canyon featuring walls painted in vibrant natural colors ranging from deep reds and oranges to purples, yellows, and whites. Located near the town of Nuweiba, this geological marvel was formed over millions of years by water erosion cutting through layers of sandstone rich in different minerals.

The Hike

The canyon hike is approximately 800 meters long and takes 1-2 hours to complete, winding through narrow passages where the colorful walls tower up to 40 meters on either side. In places, the canyon narrows to barely shoulder-width, creating a dramatic and intimate experience. The colors are most vivid in the morning and late afternoon when sunlight hits the canyon walls at low angles, creating an almost psychedelic display of natural art.

Practical Information

The canyon is accessible from Dahab, Nuweiba, or Sharm El Sheikh by 4x4 vehicle, followed by a short hike to the canyon entrance. A local Bedouin guide is recommended both for navigation and for the fascinating geological and cultural insights they provide. The hike involves some scrambling over boulders and through narrow passages, so sturdy footwear is essential.
