Abu Dabbab Bay

Abu Dabbab Bay is one of the most unique marine environments in the Red Sea, famous as one of the few places in Egypt where visitors can reliably encounter the endangered dugong (sea cow) in its natural habitat. Located south of Marsa Alam, this protected bay features a sandy bottom surrounded by seagrass beds that attract these gentle marine mammals.

Marine Wildlife

In addition to the rare dugong, Abu Dabbab is home to large green sea turtles that graze on the seagrass beds, guitar sharks (shovel-nose rays), and a colorful array of reef fish. The bay's calm, shallow waters make it accessible for snorkelers of all levels, and the visibility is typically excellent. Encountering a dugong or a large sea turtle in these clear waters is an experience that rivals any marine encounter worldwide.

Visiting Tips

Abu Dabbab has a beach resort that manages access to the bay, with snorkeling equipment available for rent. Early morning visits offer the best chances of dugong sightings. The bay can also be visited as a day trip from Marsa Alam or Port Ghalib hotels.
