Overview
Dolphin House (Sha’ab El Erg)
Sha’ab El Erg — commonly known as Dolphin House — is a shallow reef system approximately 25 km north of Hurghada that is home to a resident pod of spinner dolphins (Stenella longirostris), which regularly rest, play, and socialize in the protected waters of the reef’s inner lagoon. The site is one of the most accessible locations in the world for swimming with wild dolphins in their natural habitat, and the experience of entering the water alongside a pod of free-ranging wild spinner dolphins is one of Egypt’s most extraordinary wildlife encounters.
The dolphins at Sha’ab El Erg are wild animals that use the lagoon voluntarily — they are not fed, trained, or confined, and their presence cannot be guaranteed on any particular day. However, the site has consistent dolphin activity, and most visitors on morning trips encounter the pod either in the lagoon or on the outer reef. Spinner dolphins are particularly spectacular to observe — they are famous for their acrobatic spinning leaps above the water surface, which they perform spontaneously and unpredictably.
The surrounding reef at Sha’ab El Erg is also excellent for snorkeling and diving, with healthy coral formations, abundant reef fish, and occasional turtle sightings. Most day trips from Hurghada combine dolphin swimming with snorkeling stops at the outer reef, making the excursion a comprehensive Red Sea marine experience beyond the dolphin encounter alone.
History & Significance
Spinner dolphins are highly social cetaceans that form large pods and use certain reef systems as regular resting and socializing sites. The Sha’ab El Erg lagoon has been used by a resident pod for decades, possibly centuries — the protected, shallow, calm water of the inner lagoon provides ideal conditions for the rest phase of the dolphins’ daily cycle, which they require before their nighttime feeding activity in open water.
The site became known to Hurghada’s dive community in the 1980s and quickly developed a reputation as the most reliable dolphin encounter site on the Egyptian Red Sea. Day trips from Hurghada to Sha’ab El Erg became one of the most popular excursions from the resort, with dozens of boats now making the trip daily during high season.
The volume of boat traffic and swimmer activity at Sha’ab El Erg has raised conservation concerns — multiple boats arriving simultaneously can disturb the dolphins’ resting behavior and cause them to leave the lagoon. Egyptian authorities and some conservation organizations have introduced guidelines for responsible dolphin swimming that limit the number of boats and swimmers in the lagoon simultaneously, though enforcement is inconsistent.
