Whirling Dervish Show (Al-Tannoura)

The Whirling Dervish Show, known locally as Al-Tannoura, is one of Cairo's most mesmerizing cultural performances. Held at the historic Wekalet El-Ghouri arts center in Islamic Cairo, this free show takes place three evenings a week and draws visitors from around the world who come to witness this hypnotic display of Sufi spiritual dance.

The Performance

The dancers, dressed in colorful multi-layered skirts, spin continuously for up to an hour in a spiritual trance, their skirts creating stunning patterns of color as they whirl faster and faster. The performance is accompanied by traditional Egyptian music featuring drums, flutes, and chanting. As the dancers spin, they gradually remove layers of their skirts, creating dazzling visual effects under the lights.

Practical Tips

The show is free but extremely popular — arrive at least an hour early to secure a seat. The 14th-century Wekalet El-Ghouri itself is an architectural gem, with its beautiful courtyard providing an atmospheric backdrop. Performances are typically held on Saturday, Monday, and Wednesday evenings, but schedules can change, so it is advisable to confirm in advance.
