Wadi El-Rayan Waterfalls

The Wadi El-Rayan Waterfalls are the only waterfalls in the Egyptian desert, created where water flows between two artificial lakes in the Wadi El-Rayan Protected Area of Fayoum. While not natural in origin — the lakes were formed in the 1970s from agricultural drainage water — the waterfalls and surrounding landscape have created a stunningly beautiful desert oasis that has become one of Egypt's most popular natural attractions.

The Lakes

The upper and lower lakes of Wadi El-Rayan are connected by the waterfalls and together form an important wetland habitat in the Western Desert. The lakes attract numerous migratory birds and support a population of fish that in turn draw other wildlife to the area. The contrast of blue water against the golden desert sand creates dramatic photographic opportunities.

Activities

Visitors can enjoy sandboarding on the dunes surrounding the lakes, kayaking on the calm waters, swimming near the waterfalls, and desert camping under the stars. The area is particularly beautiful at sunset when the desert landscape is bathed in golden light. Wadi El-Rayan is typically combined with a visit to Wadi Al-Hitan for a full-day Fayoum excursion.
