Kitchener's Island (Botanical Garden)

Kitchener's Island, also known as the Island of Plants or El Nabatat Island, is a beautiful botanical garden occupying an entire island in the Nile at Aswan. Named after Lord Kitchener, the British Consul-General who transformed it into a botanical paradise during the 1890s, the garden contains an impressive collection of exotic plants and trees from around the world.

The Gardens

The garden features over 400 species of subtropical and tropical plants collected from across Africa, Asia, and the Americas, including rare palms, ebony trees, Indian rubber trees, and spectacular flowering plants. Shaded pathways wind through the lush vegetation, creating a cool, peaceful retreat from the Aswan heat. The garden is particularly beautiful in spring when many species are in bloom.

Getting There

The island is reached by felucca or motorboat from Aswan's Corniche, and the short river crossing is part of the charm. Many visitors combine a visit to Kitchener's Island with a felucca ride at sunset, stopping at Elephantine Island along the way for a perfect afternoon on the Nile.
