Sheikh Abu Al Abbas Al Mursi, a renowned Sufi saint who was instrumental in bringing Islamic teachings to Egypt in the 13th century, is honored by the mosque's name. Abu Al Abbas, who came from Murcia, Spain, first went to Tunisia before relocating to Alexandria, where he rose to prominence as a Shadhiliyya Sufi scholar. Throughout his life, he instructed and mentored his followers in religious devotion and spirituality. A mosque was built in his honor after his tomb became a hallowed location following his death in 1287.

Sheikh Zein Al Din Ibn Al Qattan, a prosperous trader who respected Abu Al Abbas, constructed the original building in 1307. The mosque has had numerous modifications over the ages, but King Farouk ordered the most extensive reconstruction to take place between 1929 and 1945. With its unique Islamic and Andalusian architectural elements, the contemporary mosque is a testimony to Egypt's rich cultural past.
