The Citadel of Qaitbay

alexandria qaitbay - Top Class Egypt Travel

The Citadel of Qaitbay, a beloved landmark in Alexandria, is a fascinating structure rich in history and maritime importance. The fortress, situated on the eastern tip of Pharos Island, was constructed in 1477 AD by Sultan Al-Ashraf Sayf al-Din Qaitbay to safeguard Alexandria from naval invasions. The site was thoughtfully selected as it was once the location of the legendary Lighthouse of Alexandria, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, which had been lost to earthquakes many centuries ago. The stones from the original lighthouse were even used in building the citadel, connecting the new fortress to its remarkable predecessor.

The Citadel of Qaitbay is full of beautiful panoramic views of both the sea and the city. The strong defensive walls, impressive battlements, and intricate interior chambers showcase the beauty of medieval Islamic military architecture. The citadel played an important role as a defensive structure during Egypt’s Ottoman period, making it a significant part of the region’s history.

Today, the Citadel of Qaitbay stands as a remarkable historical monument and a lively spot for tourists to explore. Visitors can enjoy exploring the fortress’s different sections, including its watchtowers, inner courtyards, and a little museum that showcases Alexandria’s maritime history. Also, the  views of the beautiful blue sea and the lively harbor below. The surrounding area is just as vibrant, with friendly local fishermen, delightful souvenir shops, and inviting seafood restaurants that create a charming atmosphere.

Bibliotheca Alexandrina

Alexandria Library day tour - Top Class Egypt Travel

The Bibliotheca Alexandrina, a contemporary place in the center of Alexandria, serves as a wonderful tribute to the famous Library of Alexandria, which was one of the most celebrated places of learning in ancient times. The Bibliotheca Alexandrina, which was formally opened in 2002, was constructed to bring back the spirit of its historic predecessor, which was hailed as the greatest information base in history until its unexplained demise. This amazing place now stands as an iconic symbol of education, culture, and innovation, drawing in visitors from all around the world.

The Bibliotheca Alexandrina's architecture is as inspiring as its purpose: designed by the Norwegian architectural firm Snøhetta, the building is shaped like a rising sun, representing the dawn of knowledge and enlightenment; its cylindrical structure, angled toward the Mediterranean Sea, has been decorated with carved inscriptions in more than 120 languages, celebrating the intellectual accomplishments of humanity; and its expansive glass façade lets natural light flood the interiors, creating a calm and welcoming space for learning and exploration.

The main reading room covers an impressive 70,000 square meters and can welcome over 2,000 readers at once, which makes it one of the largest libraries globally. The shelves are filled with millions of books, featuring rare manuscripts and archives. In addition to books, the library has a planetarium, museums focused on ancient manuscripts, science, and antiquities, along with art galleries and exhibition spaces.

The Pompey’s Pillar

Pompey's Pillar Alexandria - Top Class Egypt Travel

Pompey’s Pillar is a beloved ancient landmark in Alexandria, highlighting the city’s fascinating Roman history. This remarkable granite column stands at nearly 27 meters (88 feet) tall, making it the largest of its kind outside of Rome. It has drawn the attention of historians, travelers, and archaeologists for centuries. Even though it’s called that, the column isn’t related to the Roman general Pompey at all. It was built in 297 AD to honor Emperor Diocletian, who was praised for putting down a revolt in Alexandria and supplying essential grain to the city's residents during a period of famine.

The column is beautifully carved from a single piece of red Aswan granite and weighs around 285 tons. Its size and skilled craftsmanship truly make it a remarkable engineering achievement of its time. Pompey’s Pillar is the last standing piece of a much bigger complex that used to be home to the Serapeum, a magnificent temple dedicated to Serapis, a Greco-Egyptian god. The temple was a key religious and cultural hub in ancient Alexandria, featuring a library thought to enhance the Great Library of Alexandria.

Catacombs of Kom el Shoqafa

Catacombs of Kom Ash Shuqqafa Alexandria Day Tour - Top Class Egypt Travel

The Catacombs of Kom El Shoqafa in Alexandria are truly fascinating and hold a sense of mystery as one of Egypt's remarkable archaeological sites. These catacombs, which date back to the 2nd century AD during the Roman period, showcase a wonderful mix of Egyptian, Greek, and Roman architectural and cultural influences. This site started out as a family tomb and eventually grew into a communal burial ground, and today it's recognized as one of the Seven Wonders of the Middle Ages.

Kom El Shoqafa, which means “Mound of Shards,” gets its name from the many pieces of broken pottery discovered in the area. These remnants are thought to have been left by ancient mourners who discarded jars and vessels during their visits. The catacombs are beautifully carved deep into the bedrock and feature three main levels, though the lowest one is currently underwater because of groundwater.

Serapeum of Alexandria

Sonesta Sun Goddess Cruise Ship From Luxor to Aswan - Top Class Egypt Travel

The Serapeum of Alexandria was a significant religious and cultural center in ancient Egypt, dedicated to Serapis, a Greco-Egyptian deity designed to bring together the Egyptian and Hellenistic worlds. This beautiful temple, constructed in the Ptolemaic era, was a highlight of Alexandria, reflecting the city’s importance as a center for cultural and religious blending. Even in its current state, the Serapeum is a remarkable historical site that displays the city’s ancient glory and the wonderful mix of Egyptian, Greek, and Roman traditions.

The Serapeum was built to pay tribute to Serapis, a god linked to fertility, healing, and the afterlife. The temple complex used to be perched on a high plateau in the southwest of the city, providing stunning views of Alexandria and the Mediterranean Sea. The design was truly impressive, featuring towering columns, grand statues, and beautifully decorated sanctuaries that showcased a blend of Egyptian and Hellenistic architectural styles.

The Serapeum featured a grand statue of Serapis, nestled among altars and areas dedicated to worship. The temple also had underground chambers, thought to be used for rituals and maybe as a place for sacred texts and treasures.
